The #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration’s organizers were arrested, and their lawyers has questioned the officers involved.
He referred to the detention of the Democracy Hub activists as “undemocratic,” and he said that the group’s organizers had never been given a court notice.
The regional police headquarters in Accra Central are currently holding 50 or so members of the organisation in detention.
Prince Ganaku, the lawyer, reprimanded the police for detaining the organizers who were also defending their interests.
“To the authorities, know that these people are on your side. When your children are unwell, they will go to the hospitals that you and I visit, not the ones that the wealthy patronize. I am aware of your income. I am unable to adequately convey to you how strongly these folks support you when you decide to conduct an unauthorized arrest.
They are battling for your children, and since your parents’ money is in the banks, you will suffer if they fail right away. Your kids will suffer when the educational system collapses. We understand that you are unable to demonstrate, thus these folks are carrying out your tasks for you. Be mindful of what you are doing. Why are you shooting yourself in the foot? the lawyer questioned.
He also issued a strong invitation to attorneys to speak out against the arrest and to appear in person to defend the rule of law at the various police stations where the arrested organizers are being held.
To those lawyers interested in upholding the rule of law, I want to send a message. Every lawyer, every lawyer group, and the Ghana Bar Association should be aware that what is happening is unlawful. You ought to be under an ethical and moral duty to speak up in circumstances like this. As we currently live in a democratic system, such events shouldn’t be occurring.
“I want to issue a call to action to all attorneys, urging them to appear in support of the rule of law. This is unconstitutional, and the arrest is unquestionably illegal. In order to get everyone released, we will work nonstop.
