African leaders have been urged by former president John Dramani Mahama to adopt a visa-free policy that will enable easy travel within the continent.
Speaking at the Afro-Heritage Conference in Lagos, Nigeria, the flagbearer of the NDC stressed the value of this kind of strategy in promoting economic growth and regional integration.
The former president further believes that by lowering travel restrictions, African countries would be able to take advantage of fresh chances for cooperation, investment, and trade, which would eventually spur socioeconomic growth across the continent.
“Isn’t it difficult to develop as a continent when countries require visas to travel to each other? For instance, in the European Union, people don’t need a visa to travel from Belgium to Scandinavia, and in the U.S., they don’t need a visa to travel from New York to California.
However, in Africa, we should be able to travel from Ghana to Ethiopia without a visa.
Although we are heading in the right direction, we need to move faster because our young population is getting restless with the pace of opportunities being created for them.”
