Former President John Mahama has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to spend billions of Ghana cedis on building the National Cathedral instead of focusing on the neglected Saglemi Housing Project. Mahama believes that this is a misplacement of priorities.
Recently, President Akufo-Addo ordered the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the criminal judicial proceedings surrounding the Saglemi Housing project, which was initiated by the previous John Mahama administration.
In a Facebook post, the former President suggested that if President Akufo-Addo had finished the Saglemi Housing project, many Ghanaian families would have access to improved living conditions.
“Akufo-Addo’s spending of over half a billion cedis on a national cathedral project that has been abandoned due to corruption is deemed unacceptable. It’s puzzling that he’s unwilling to allocate funds to complete a housing project that would provide shelter for thousands of Ghanaian families.”
“According to Mr. Mahama, the NPP government may have intentionally abandoned the Saglemi housing project because it was started by the previous NDC administration under his leadership. He believes that leaders should prioritize the welfare of their citizens and ensure that they benefit from government projects and resources, regardless of which party initiated them.”
“In his statement, he expressed disappointment with the government’s misplaced priorities. He pointed out the irony of claiming to be unable to raise funds for the Saglemi housing project while spending half a billion cedis on the largest civil excavation in Africa. He believes this is a disrespectful move to the people of Ghana who entrusted their mandate to Akufo Addo.”
“It’s worth considering the significant impact that the past 7 years could have had on numerous Ghanaian families and individuals in Saglemi if they had access to decent living conditions and a true place to call home.”
