Following the 13th All-African Games, a dramatic scene erupted at the hostel where volunteers were living, with them and officials arguing over allowances.
In addition to their promised GHC500 transport charge, the volunteers claim that officials have withheld their pay of GHC2,000 per.
They said that authorities had forced them to leave their hostels and that this had forced them to return home.
“We the 13th ALL AFRICAN GAMES Volunteers have been denied our due including TNT and are being forced to leave the Hostels immediately,” one volunteer complained in an expression of grievance.
“It was agreed that we would receive GHC2,500, GHC500 for TNT, and GHC2,000 as an allowance or appreciation package,” he clarified. When they visited us on Monday, March 25, they even pledged to provide the money to us by Tuesday, March 26, at noon. just to issue a statement requesting our departure from the various hostels.
Officials assured them otherwise, but they were told to leave the hostels without being paid what was owed to them.
“We have been denied our allowances, the situation here is sad.” Where can we obtain cash to go back home?
He added, “A police officer stationed at the Pentagon hostel fired a gunshot.”
He lashed out at officials for refusing to “manage their expectations, so that they don’t get disappointed.”
The volunteers assert that they were divided into several units, including Language Liaison, Protocol and Ceremonies, Transport, Accommodation, Janitorial, Medical, Crowd Control, Logistics and Supply, Games Venue, and Catering.
During the opening ceremony, volunteers for protocol and ceremonies—such as marshals, flag bearers, and card bearers—had notable responsibilities to play.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) had authority over the conditions of its contract.
