The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has expressed concern about the massive uncontrolled corruption that is suffocating Ghana.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2023 plenary assembly in the Sunyani Diocese on November 13, 2023, Rev. Gyamfi emphasized the debilitating impact of uncontrolled corruption on the country’s persistent impoverishment, despite its status as an oil producer.
He further stated that the issue of corruption seems to be pervasive and almost legalized, raising critical questions about the efficacy of the current democratic system, which appears to benefit only a privileged few while leaving the majority of the population behind.
Rev. Gyamfi also pointed out the audacious impunity and arrogance displayed by some politicians in defending corrupt practices.
He criticized successive governments for the level of deterioration in the country as well as the surge in corruption.
The two governments are continuously borrowing, and this has resulted in a deep financial crisis. The root cause of this economic and financial crisis is the massive uncontrolled corruption that is suffocating the nation.
“It seems like corruption has been legalized, and it’s affecting the majority of Ghanaians. What can Ghanaians do when the existing form of democracy only benefits a few and leaves the majority behind? Moreover, politicians display impunity and arrogance when defending corruption.
Should the constitution not be revised to work for all Ghanaians instead of serving only a few? Shouldn’t the legal system be re-equipped to eradicate corruption? Also, what about our Parliament, where the interests of the people are compromised for personal and party interests? Why haven’t we implemented the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee?
Can the government explain to us why we are in this economic mess? What explanations can the two political parties give to Ghanaians for the unfavourable agreements we sign concerning our oil, minerals, power generation, etc.?
Countries that have an abundance of these resources are wealthy, so why do we remain poor? Ghanaians no longer accept the old explanations that the Ghanaian government has been giving.
