The National Democratic Congress Youth Wing has placed partial blame on the Supreme Court for the challenges faced by the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
The party argues that recent decisions by the apex court have given the Electoral Commission a sense of impunity.
The Electoral Commission has encountered network difficulties in several registration centres, making it challenging for prospective voters to register.
In an interview with Citi News, the NDC’s National Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo, pointed to the Supreme Court’s actions in the 2021 election petition as one of the ways it has emboldened the election management body.
Opare Addo believes that the Electoral Commission is not adhering to the laws and principles that mandate the registration of all eligible voters and the establishment of registration centres closer to the people.
He blames the Supreme Court for its handling of the 2020 election petition, stating that public officers have a responsibility to account for their stewardship at the end of their service.
He further criticizes the Supreme Court for not subjecting Jean Mensa, the Electoral Commission Chair, to the same scrutiny as former EC Chair, Dr Afari Gyan, after the latter had changed election results four times.
According to Opare Addo, public servants who face challenges in the course of their service owe it to the public to explain why those challenges occurred.
