The sudden cancellation of Convention 2024, which was planned by the New Africa Foundation, has been explained by the Office of the President’s Diaspora Affairs Directorate.
Confusion and sadness resulted from the organizers being told to cancel the event even though it had been approved in November 2023.
According to Dr. Nadia Adongo Fynn, Deputy Director of the Diaspora Affairs Directorate, the decision to withdraw the authorization was motivated by the announcement of an “unforeseen” state event that was supposed to occur at the Black Star Square location.
“We write to revoke immediately the permission granted per our letter No.OP/PH/02 dated November 11, 2024, approved your request to use the Black Star Square for the above event,” Dr. Nadia Fynn said in an official statement.
“This decision has been necessitated by an unforeseen State Event scheduled to take place at the venue.”
She added that the organizers’ GH¢10,000 payment for the use of the premises would be reimbursed.
The statement concluded with regret for any inconvenience caused by the sudden cancellation.
The unexpected turn of events left many Ghanaians who had gathered at the venue for the pan-African event stranded, as security personnel reportedly denied them access to the facility.
