The minority in Ghana’s parliament is adamantly against the government’s attempts to mend the Saglemi Housing Project by partnering with a private developer.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, estimates that $100 million will be needed to rehabilitate the area.
Oppong Nkrumah revealed hopes to find a private partner in five weeks at a Tuesday project site review.
He said, “I instructed the technical working group to move forward with an international expression of interest within the next five weeks to draw in private developers who can come in and finish this project for us so that we can put it to use.”
The ranking member of the Works and Housing Committee, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, has asserted that the government plans to transfer ownership of the Saglemi Housing Project to its friends and associates.
All they want to do is lower the price so they can sell it to their friends. They are claiming that although they are bringing in partners, their people will ultimately enter the picture. Every property and state land under NPP rule is up for grabs if you venture out. All real estate, including landed property, is up for sale. We will see the rot after the NPP regime ends.
The Saglemi housing project was started in 2012, by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, to build 5,000 dwelling units.
However, charges of cash embezzlement have engulfed the project in controversy and forced its termination.
