Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former member of parliament for the Adentan constituency and member of the Movement for Change, has said that Hopeson Adorye’s detention has political motivations.
Leading Movement for Change member Hopeson Adorye was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of setting off dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Elections.
In an Accra radio broadcast, Mr Adorye made an allegation that has since gone viral.
Mr Buaben Asamoa clarified in an interview with Citi FM that Mr Adorye was taken into custody after being requested to come to the police headquarters on Wednesday.
He continued by saying that he went with Mr Adorye to the police headquarters, where he spent the entire day after Adorye was asked to provide a statement.
But at 6:00 p.m., they were informed that Mr. Adorye would be placed under arrest while they awaited additional orders from above.
Mr. Buaben Asamoa asserts that the police are awaiting orders from above, suggesting that the arrest is not only a police decision, and he feels that Adorye’s detention was made for political reasons.
Furthermore, he thinks that Adorye’s detention is an attempt to weaken the Movement for Change and suppress the outspoken activist.
“Because of some of Hopson’s statements, some people are feeling a little tense and jiffy since he has been making waves.” And this is how you can stifle him in an attempt to scare the reform movement, but it won’t succeed. I firmly think it has political motivations.
Mr Adorye is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court on Thursday. He has not been charged with a crime yet, but the police are investigating a case of publication of false information.
