John Dramani Mahama, the former president of the United States, expressed his unhappiness over the $190 million that was supposed to be used for private sector involvement in the distribution of power under the US Millennium Compact.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer said in a Facebook post that the $190 million US Millenium Compact was lost as a result of “corrupt, ‘yenkyendi,’ and cronyistic governance practices” overseen by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The former president promised to improve private sector efficiency in electricity distribution, including metering, revenue management, and fault response. He also pledged to investigate the PDS scandal and hold those responsible accountable.
The controversial PDS Ghana Limited takeover of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was suspended due to allegations of fraud. This led to the US government halting the transfer of around $190 million of crucial funding for infrastructure investments and financial recovery of the energy sector under MCC’s Ghana Power Compact.
Below is the full statement.
Dear fellow Ghanaians,
It is disheartening to know that the $190 million we negotiated for private sector participation in electricity distribution as part of the US Millennium Compact has been lost due to corrupt practices by Nana Addo and Bawumia’s administration.
Their cronyistic governance practices are unacceptable, and as a people, we deserve better.
As I prepare to assume the presidency in January 2025, thanks to your votes and endorsement in this year’s election, I want to assure you that I will work diligently to enhance private sector efficiency in the electricity distribution system.
This includes implementing measures for better metering, revenue management, and prompt fault response.
My administration will prioritize accountability and ensure a thorough investigation of the PDS scandal to hold those involved accountable.
Together, we can build a brighter future for Ghana’s power sector that benefits both citizens and businesses.
Let’s unite, fight against corruption and cronyism, and work towards building the Ghana that we desire.
