It is anticipated that Parliament will pass the 2024 Budget today. On November 30, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, reiterated that the 2024 budget statement and economic policy had not been approved.
The previous day, the Majority walked out during the statement’s approval, criticizing the Speaker’s behavior as unfortunate and inappropriate.
They claimed that following a voice vote on the floor, the Speaker initially ruled in favor of the Majority side. However, after the Minority challenged the voice vote and demanded a headcount, the Speaker changed his ruling.
The Minority also accused the Speaker of using delay tactics to allow members not in the chamber to rush in and be counted.
The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, alleged that the Speaker was playing for time to enable five members of the Minority who were not present in the chamber to arrive.
However, making a case for his alleged u-turn, the Speaker said he had merely uttered an opinion and had not delivered a ruling.
