The Gender Equity and Affirmative Action Bill 2024 has been passed by Parliament.
The bill’s goal is to successfully resolve gender inequalities in society, culture, the economy, and politics arising from historical discrimination against women and enduring patriarchal sociocultural norms and systems.
In addition, the bill aims to guarantee gender parity in the public and personal lives.
Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin said, “Honorable members the ‘ayes’ have it,” during his Tuesday speech on the passage. Following a proper third reading and passage, the Affirmative Action Gender Equality Bill now known as “the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024” was approved.
Meanwhile, Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has earlier expressed his dissatisfaction with the Affirmative Action Bill.
He argued that the bill’s content did not specifically address issues relevant to Ghana, but instead focused more on matters in other countries.
Mr Iddrisu voiced his concerns while speaking at the 15th MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit in Kumasi.
He encouraged women to aspire but also to manage their aspirations.
