Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, the member of parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency, has threatened to make commercial sex work operations in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Regional, an unprofitable endeavor.
The increase in commercial sex work activities in Koforidua, according to the MP who also serves as the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, has the potential to negatively corrupt youth and damage the city’s reputation.
The MP made this commitment after approving a police operation in the Koforidua District that resulted in the arrest of about 50 commercial sex workers on Saturday in well-known brothels and ghettos in the regional capital, of which more than 90% are of Nigerian heritage.
Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, who confirmed the operation and arrest while speaking to worshippers at the Pentecost International Worship Center in Koforidua (PIWC-KOFORIDUA) over the weekend, urged locals, especially landlords, to come forward with information about commercial sex workers in their area so that the police can crack down on them.
“I told the police to conduct an operation in the town yesterday, and they began the first round of operations. We want to detain all the prostitutes who have arrived in the town. About 50 persons were taken into custody, and 99 percent of them are Nigerians. We will present them to the court.
The MP said, “Prostitution in Koforidua will not be accepted, and we implore you to assist us in dealing with the act in the town.
