Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has voiced his concerns about the future of Ghanaian football, warning of significant challenges if the national team fails to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ghana, a four-time African champion, is currently in a precarious position, sitting third in their group with only two points after three matches.
The team recently faced disappointing results, including a 1-0 loss to Angola at home and a 1-1 draw against Niger. Most recently, they were held to a goalless draw by Sudan in the first leg of their doubleheader at Accra Sports Stadium. This string of underwhelming performances has put their qualification hopes in jeopardy.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Agyemang-Badu, who played in the 2015 AFCON final, highlighted the gravity of the situation: “If we fail to qualify, it will be a setback for Ghana football. Ghanaians are used to discussing how to win AFCON, but now we are struggling to qualify. It’s a worrying trend.”
Ghana is set to face Sudan later today in the return leg at the Martyrs of February Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 13:00 GMT. The outcome of this match could be crucial in determining their chances of advancing to the tournament.
