James Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Assin North, claimed to have the support of several influential members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He expressed his gratitude to everyone of them for helping him win the by-election on Tuesday, June 27.
Just before the Tuesday, June 27 by-election results were announced, he told reporters, “I believe in the rule of law and I do things according to the law. Additionally, I had the support of my fellow citizens, not just those in Assin North, my NDC family, and NPP supporters from the opposing side of the aisle. They could be unable to publicly identify themselves.
“I was treated unfairly but as I said I had to abide by the court’s decision. If they didn’t believe in what I did, now they know the results.”
He was declared the winner of the by-election with 17,245 of the total valid votes cast.
To win back the seat, he defeated Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He has a more than 1,300 vote advantage over the 2020 results. Mr. Gyakye Quayson won the election with 17,498 votes, defeating Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP with 14,193 votes.
Mr. Gyakye Quayson, whose election was ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court in 2020, will reappear to assume his place in Parliament.
