The death of Madam Poanaa Azaratu Musah on Sunday, September 24, 2023, in connection with a witchcraft claim has prompted the West Mamprusi Municipal Police Command to launch a manhunt for Habib Sumani, also known as Abilla.
Alhassan Sumani, the father of the suspect, allegedly made the claim after passing away in Gambaga while undergoing local treatment for an unidentified disease.
The defendant shot 60-year-old Poana Musah with a hunting gun at the door of her home in Janga, a neighborhood near Nasia in West Mamprusi Municipality, ostensibly out of retaliation for the loss of his father and to carry out the intentions of the deceased. He fled, avoiding the community’s wrath, as soon as he realized that the deceased had passed away.
The suspect’s father has been accusing the deceased Poana Musah of witchcraft for the previous four weeks, according to a neighbor who lives close to the deceased, who spoke to Starr News. When they reported the suspect’s death, the deceased ought to have been lynched, according to the suspect’s father. The suspect’s father insisted that his sister was to blame for his illness despite the fact that he had seen multiple native healers.
Since the two deceased were connected despite the witchcraft allegation, the verbal assault and attack on the deceased were later reported at the chief palace in Janga by family members.
According to a source close to the chief palace, the chief’s involvement had little effect, according to Starr News. They disclosed that the deceased Poana Musah was requested to go to the temple for customary purification, which will decide whether or not she is a witch, during a meeting in the chief’s palace.
The late Poana Musah did not follow the palace’s instructions. According to the source, attempts to get Poana Musah to go to the shrine were unsuccessful multiple times, which led the suspect’s father to blame her repeatedly and threaten to have her lynched if he passes away as a result of the disease.
When Habib Sumani learned that his father had passed away, he immediately grabbed a hunting rifle and proceeded to the deceased’s house. There, he met the departed Poana Musah and shot her twice. The mechanism that caused the deceased’s death resulted in significant blood loss.
The victim’s body, which the police had taken up, has been placed at Walewale Government Hospital for further investigation.
The police command has nonetheless launched a manhunt for Habib Sumani, the prime suspect, and a few of the late Alhassan Sumani’s family members in connection with the death of Madam Poana Musah.
