The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a dire warning against any attempt to remove Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police.
There were rumours that the IGP was requested to take a compulsory leave of absence and pass over control of his office to his deputy, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who was allegedly involved in the incident involving the leaked tapes in 2023.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) is committed to leading the force as directed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Ghana Police Service has denied these reports.
Despite this, the NDC is still skeptical, questioning the police service’s justification and voicing worries about a purported plan to change the IGP as a component of a bigger plot to rig the general election scheduled for December.
Mustapha Gbande, the NDC’s deputy secretary, slammed President Akufo-Addo with being careless and putting his interests ahead of that of the country.
He emphasized that attempts to subvert the nation’s democratic processes will not be tolerated by the NDC.
“We can guarantee President Akufo-Addo that the National Democratic Congress will use all of its power and might to repudiate any attempt to rig the 2024 election,” Nothing will be able to override the people’s will.
“Therefore, President Akufo-Addo ought to reconsider his actions and return home as a former president, as he has appointed certain people in the best interests of Ghanaians if the entire controversy surrounding his attempt to remove the IGP is related to the election.”
“At least if you look at the Ghana Police Service’s reformation since he took office, you see some seriousness,” said IGP. The police have taken me into custody multiple times. There is a certain amount of discipline evident, even in the way that police officers dress. It improves our nation’s reputation rather than that of the NPP or President Akufo-Addo. It is about the country, not about the president.
“We need to tell President Akufo-Addo straight out that he can’t always think it’s about him because we have pampered him into becoming an irresponsible president.”
