The opposition party’s spokesperson, Sammy Adu Gyamfi, is urging the Chief Justice to step down following her involvement in selecting judges for the Supreme Court. According to Gyamfi, the Chief Justice’s actions were unconstitutional and driven by personal motives rather than the country’s best interests.
The controversy arose from a letter dated May 30, 2024, in which the Chief Justice recommended the appointment of five new justices to the Supreme Court.
The opposition party accused the President and the Chief Justice of collaborating to prevent government officials from being held accountable after leaving office. They claimed that the Chief Justice and the President disregarded the Judicial Council’s opposition to nominating the five judges.
The opposition party expressed concerns about transparency and fairness in the appointment process and potential biases.
On the other hand, the Majority in Parliament defended the Chief Justice’s proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 20, stating that it is within legal boundaries and does not violate any laws.
