A petition has been filed to impeach William Kissi Agyebeng, the current Special Prosecutor, by former Special Prosecutor Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu.
In his demand for Mr. Agyebeng’s impeachment, Mr. Amidu makes accusations of abuses involving judges and the administration of justice as well as procurement violations in the purchase of cars for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Additional claims include infringements on people’s rights via erroneous staff nominations to the office, arrests and detentions, and information access violations.
Mr Amidu claims that Mr Agyebeng violated his right to information when he asked to have all of the OSP employees’ appointment letters and salary information placed on a pen drive for him.
On April 30, 2024, President Akufo-Addo received the petition, which Mr Kissi Agyebeng confirmed, and on May 6, 2024, it was sent to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
As stipulated by Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice is reportedly assessing whether there is a sufficient basis to form a committee for Mr. Agyebeng’s removal.
