Former President John Mahama has come under heavy fire from President Akufo-Addo for his recent comments in which he claimed that the judiciary was stacked with justices who supported the current government’s NPP party.
President Akufo-Addo spoke at the Ghana Bar Conference at the University of Cape Coast and voiced his serious concern over Mr. Mahama’s remarks, calling them “very dangerous” for the development of the nation.
He highlighted that someone of Mr. Mahama’s position should not make such utterances.
The President emphasized that this poses a significant threat to the independence of the judiciary in Ghana, constituting one of the most severe attacks in its history.
The public should hold Mr. Mahama responsible for his “reckless” remarks that try to discredit the judiciary, president of Ghana, Akufo-Addo, said. He stressed the value of respecting the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, which is essential to maintaining the rule of law in the nation.
“I have gone into this matter in detail because of a new issue which has been introduced into our public discourse by no less a public figure than the fourth president of the fourth republic, John Dramani Mahama who has told the world that I have packed the courts with so-called NPP judges and that one of the key purposes a putative NDC victory in 2024 will be to enable him to balance the courts with so-called NDC judges.”
These ideas are not only novel to public discourse but also exceedingly dangerous and signify an outright attack on the independence of the judiciary by ostensibly responsible politicians, he said.
