John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s (flag-bearer for 2024), is planning a visit to some of the venues where the ongoing limited voter registration exercise is taking place.
Prior to visiting the Adenta, La, and Tema district offices, he would first stop by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) headquarters.
Tuesday, September 12, marked the start of the limited voter registration process, which was slated to end on Monday, October 2.
The EC’s decision to have it done only in districts rather than electoral areas was opposed by the NDC, other political parties, and civil society organizations at the outset.
However, it was encouraged for everyone to participate completely in the process, even first-timers.
The EC was urged by Mr. Mahama to pay attention to requests to move voter registration closer to the polling stations.
“I wish to add my voice to those who have called on the EC to reconsider its decision to limit the registration exercise to its district offices only,” he remarked in a Facebook Live session on September 6th.
“It is also our steadfast suggestions that the Commission heed the request for the extension of the exercise to take place in the electoral areas and not only in the district offices of the Commission, in accordance with regulation 22(b) of CI 91 as amended by CI 126.
This will eliminate a number of annoyances, such as access, transportation, and a lack of funds to travel from far-off places.
