According to former president John Mahama, the majority of people requesting voter identification cards have them through a guarantor system.
“On Friday, I went to a few registration centers in the Greater Accra Region, where I saw a long queue of young people waiting to register. It was obvious that a sizeable number had signed up through the guarantor scheme.
Mr. Mahama admonished the National Identification Authority in a tweet on Saturday, June 16, 2023, “If, in the future, we must use the Ghana Card as the sole identifier for registration, then the National Identification Authority must up its game to avoid disenfranchising millions of our citizens.”
However, John Mahama, the NDC’s 2024 candidate, has again begged the EC to rethink its decision to limit the ongoing voter registration drive to district offices.
He claims that the process has been marked by difficulties that make it very difficult for prospective voters—mostly young people—to participate.
On Friday, September 15, 2023, he renewed the appeal during a tour of the Electoral Commission (EC)’s Greater Accra Headquarters, which serves as a hub for five constituencies.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer stated the EC had no excuse to continue to subject the registrants to such poor treatment.
He further asked the EC to seek for more funds if financial constraints are to blame for the decision.
