Drones have been given to 17 Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies by the Ministry of Local Government and Decentralization to help monitor and stop illicit activities like throwing trash down drains.
This will improve the nation’s efforts to mitigate flooding and improve cleanliness.
To support the GARID project’s efforts to strengthen flood preparedness in the Odaw River basin, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, the project coordinator, and sector Minister O.B. Amoah also launched the steering committee and inter-jurisdictional coordination management.
He emphasized how crucial drones are in assisting the assembly with monitoring duties.
Dr. Sarfo continued, “The drones are expensive, highly sophisticated, and not meant for social gatherings.”
He cautioned the Assemblies to ensure that the drones are used solely for their intended purpose and not misused by staff, appointees, friends, or others.
“The drones are supposed to support the Assembly in monitoring the waste hotspots. So the general oversight functions of the assembly are what the drone is supposed to help with. We caution the assembly that these drones are costly.
“They are not the ones you ordinarily see around for programmes like weddings and funerals. So we caution the Assembly not to allow staff, appointees, friends and whoever to utilise the drones for these kinds of social events.”
