Today, May 23, there are three candidates vying for the Kumawu parliamentary seat: the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP), the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and two independents.
Furthermore, according to the Ghana Police Service, a plan was developed to ensure sufficient security and maintain peace and order.
The NPP representative for the constituency, Philip Basoah, passed away in March, necessitating a by-election.
The two major political parties are concentrating on taking the seat in order to increase their representation in the legislature and to use it as a barometer for their separate campaigns in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Despite the NDC and the two independent candidates’ fierce resistance, the NPP, which previously controlled the seat, feels confident of keeping it.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for instance, has urged NPP supporters to turn out in force and vote overwhelmingly for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim.
Dr. Bawumia stated that the administration wishes to demonstrate to Ghana that Kumawu is NPP territory and that they intend to keep the seat.
“Through this by-election, we want the entire country of Ghana to know that Kumawu is NPP territory.” With love, please vote for our parliamentary candidate Ernest Yaw Anim to win this by-election.”
“He’s humble, hardworking, and brilliant. He will see that Kumawu grows. “I really like him; let’s all come together and vote for him boom boom,” Dr. Bawumia said.
George Opare Addo, the NDC’s national youth organizer, is confident that the party would shock everyone by winning the Kumawu by-election.
He claimed that NDC had made a sincere effort to win the constituency.
Mr. Opare Addo added that a victory would shock some political figures in addition to upending the nation’s current political climate.
“There will be a surprise in Kumawu and a new Member of Parliament (MP) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency.”
On the poll notice, the independent candidates surprisingly have the same names and are dressed similarly, in kente. They adopted the same sign as well, but the EC intervened after receiving much criticism and changed it.
One of the two independents, who ran before and received strong support but fell short, is considered a dark horse. And he insists that now is the time.
34,800 people were registered to vote in Kumawu as of the general elections in 2020.
While the police have increased their presence to ensure nothing untoward occurs, the EC, which is organizing the by-election, has promised that all necessary materials are ready for the by-election.
