Former 2012 Olympian and WBC/WBO Light Welterweight champion Jose “Jaguar” Carlos Ramirez defeated Richard Commey, former IBF Lightweight champion, in the eleventh round of a title eliminator. The victory came at 2:31 of the twelfth and final round.
The Ghanaian was stopped for the second time in his career after a TKO loss to Teofimo Lopez in 2019 with his record worsening to 30 wins, five losses and one draw.
Ramirez dominated from the start, landing left hooks to the body and having Commey on the ropes in the first and second rounds. Commey fought back in the third round, but it wasn’t enough to win the round. Halfway through the fourth round, Commey landed a pair of rights to Ramirez’s chin but then returned to the ropes.
Ramirez continued to have Commey against the ropes in the fifth round, and Commey’s best punch, a right on the chin of Ramirez, came halfway through the sixth round. The fans cheered for Ramirez at the end of the sixth round as he had Commey against the ropes.
Both fighters threw punches in bunches in the seventh round, and Commey landed some solid lead rights on the chin of Ramirez. However, in the ninth round, it became evident that Commey was a lightweight in a super lightweight fight and not strong enough to hurt Ramirez.
By the tenth round, Commey was exhausted and clinching too much. He landed a right on the chin of Ramirez at the end of the round. In the eleventh round, Ramirez dropped Commey with a left hook to the back of the head as he was going down. Commey got up and fought back, but a body shot hurt him, and he dropped to a knee, taking the full count.
In the co-feature, WBA World Minimum World champion Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada easily defeated WBC World Minimum World champion “Tiny” Tina Rupprecht to unify the titles.
