National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama has denounced President Akufo-Addo’s recent meeting with an Oti Region chief, calling it a disrespectful and unpresidential gesture toward traditional chiefs.
On Monday, April 29, Mr Mahama posted on social media to voice his concerns about President Akufo-Addo’s behavior, advising political watchers to treat it with seriousness.
He emphasized that the nation’s chiefs’ dignity is being threatened by the President’s activities.
In the days left in President Akufo-Addo’s presidency, Mr. Mahama fears more disrespectful acts if he does not chastise the president for his attitude.
Ghanaians, particularly those who hold traditional authorities in high regard, are urged by the former president to exercise caution and hold their leaders responsible for preserving proper decency and respect.
Ghanaians are divided about the show; some criticize the President’s actions, while others argue that they are only a result of a misunderstanding of local customs.
“Our democracy has been severely damaged by Nana Addo/Bawumia’s nearly eight-year reign.” “The President’s demeanour and statements are quite concerning as his term draws to a close.”
“His recent insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers,” he stated.
In the meantime, Mr. Mahama delivered a biting indictment of President Akufo-Addo, charging him with seeking to subvert Ghana’s constitution and control the political system to advance his preferred successor.
His criticism followed Akufo-Addo’s declaration in which he said he would not cede power to a rival he had already defeated.
Additionally, he recently declared that no one he has defeated in an election before could succeed him. This undermines the essential idea of the peaceful transfer of power since it suggests a haughty disposition and reeks of an intrinsically anti-democratic mindset.”
“Nana Addo needs to be reminded that the only things that will decide who replaces him are the votes cast by Ghana’s noble people and the will of the Almighty God. This underlines the people’s ability to impact the destiny of our country,” he continued.
