Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to sign the anti-LGBTQ bill into law should the Supreme Court rule that it is lawful.
The Osu Traditional Council and the bill’s primary supporter, Samuel Nartey George, have called for accelerated processes in response to the bill’s delays, which are currently pending a court verdict.
The Supreme Court decided to make its finding on injunction applications—which were meant to stop the bill from being delivered to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent—alongside the final judgment, delaying its decision.
In a recent media engagement, Dr. Bawumia affirmed that he would promptly sign the bill once it receives constitutional clearance.
He stated, “I think that is very, very important. The Bill is before the Supreme Court right now and I think there are certain challenges that have been made to it that is to say that it’s not consistent with the constitution.”
“Of course, we’ll wait for it to come and once it’s out of the Supreme Court and they declare it as constitutional, I believe signing is automatic, there shouldn’t be any issue. No ifs and no buts, we won’t allow.”
