Allegations that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, was responsible for the audio tape recording have been negated.
On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, Dr Dampare responded to a query from Mr Atta Akyea, the head of the special parliamentary committee looking into the audio that was allegedly released containing a conspiracy to have him removed.
One of the senior police officers who allegedly participated in the plot to remove the IGP, Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah, claimed earlier, when he appeared before the committee, that Dr Dampare conspired with Chief Bugri Naabu to covertly record their private conversation.
According to him, the present IGP “seems to have done what was done to video the discussion,” he said.
Dr. Dampare refuted the accusation, though, when he appeared before the committee to provide his explanation for what happened.
The committee was established by Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin after Elembele MP Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah informed the House of the contents of the tape. According to the Speaker’s instruction, the committee’s mandate is to ascertain the veracity of the audio recording that was leaked, look into the plot to oust the current IGP, look into any other matter mentioned in the audio recording, recommend sanctions for those found guilty when necessary, recommend reforms when necessary, and issue any other recommendations and related orders that the committee may deem necessary.
