The next National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration has promised to prioritize farmer welfare while ensuring adequate resources, according to former president John Dramani Mahama.
He claims that his administration will also provide national farmers with greater opportunities.
“We will keep investing in the success of our farmers because they are the foundation of our economy,” he said.
“As the nation celebrates the 39th National Farmer’s Day Celebration on Friday, he wrote on Facebook, “On this occasion, I want to assure our farmers that the next NDC government will prioritise their welfare and work tirelessly to ensure they have the necessary resources and support to thrive.”
The theme of this year’s festivities is “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience.”
Mr. Mahama claims that the theme emphasizes the value of resilience and innovation in agriculture. “To ensure sustainable food security for our nation, even as we celebrate our farmers today, we must acknowledge the need for smart solutions within a 24-hour economy.”
Mr. Mahama also promised to revolutionize the agriculture industry and restore the joy of farming.
“By implementing policies that encourage large-scale commercial agricultural production, we hope to achieve food self-sufficiency.
“This will be driven by a strong cooperative system that will profit from Farmers’ Service Centers created across the country to promote input and credit access for agriculture,” he continued.
As per his statement, the NDC intends to establish agro-processing units in every region to enhance the worth of agricultural products and generate greater prospects for farmers.
“Establishing agricultural processing plants will target crops such as palm, cashew, groundnuts, cotton, coffee, cocoa, soya, cassava, shea nuts, cereals, ginger, spices, cut flowers, fruits and horticultural products,” he added.
