The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been reported by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to the Energy Minister for their failure to provide customers with a load-shedding timetable during ongoing power outages, also known as “dumsor.”
Because the maximum grid capacity is not available, GRIDCo reports that the National System Control Centre (NSCC) has asked ECG to offer a timeline. It cautions that ECG’s unwillingness to comply with this request poses a serious risk to the stability of the national grid.
In a petition that was delivered to the Minister on Thursday, March 28, GRIDCo warns of the possible disruptions in customers’ access to power as a result of the actions of ECG.
“We take serious note of the frequent occurrences in which employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Operations department disregard the SCC’s load management directives. This failure to comply presents a serious risk to the electricity grid’s stability and could result in:
- Avoidable power outages for customers
- System collapse
ECG Operations receives load management instructions from the SCC regularly. But frequently, these guidelines are either ignored or applied poorly. As a result, the frequency of the system decreases, which sets off.”
Additionally, GRIDCo made it clear that the charges made against it for emergency disconnections are not true in the current situation.
The business emphasized that GRIDCo should not be held accountable for matters outside of its purview because ECG’s disregard for load management directives is a breach of the law.
“ECG sends customer notices attributing the power outage to GRIDCo when these emergency disconnections occur, which is not an accurate assessment of the current situation. Furthermore, it is obviously against the rules for ECG to ignore load management orders.
As a result, GRIDCo is pleading with the Minister to step in and guarantee that ECG follows the release of a load-shedding timetable.
To secure ECG’s assistance with load management activities, we kindly bring this to your notice, Honourable Minister, and request your prompt involvement,” the petition stated.
