During the Constitution Day Public Lecture on Monday, January 8, 2024, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman, expressed his concerns about the integrity of some of Ghana’s most important institutions.
In his address, he emphasized that corruption, particularly in the public sector and public life, has led to economic challenges for the nation.
Dr. Afari-Gyan pointed out that some key institutions are becoming institutions of dubious integrity.
He also noted that political party candidates, who lose elections, often allege manipulation and refuse to accept the results. This contributes to the erosion of faith in democratic principles.
He highlighted the need to instil the values of democratic behaviour widely in society and emphasized the importance of predictability in social life as an incentive for proper conduct.
Additionally, he called for a concerted effort to address these issues, emphasizing the crucial role of key institutions in upholding the integrity of the democratic process and fostering a more transparent and accountable society.
Dr. Afari-Gyan also mentioned that the calls for constitutional review to solve this issue are in the right direction. However, he added that the constitution should not be tampered with unnecessarily, even though the recommendations are welcome.
