The UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting 2023 will take place on December 5 and 6, 2023, in Accra, Ghana. The summit, which will be the first of its kind on the African continent, will be attended by all members of the United Nations Peacekeeping Committee.
At a news conference following the conclusion of the 78th United Nations General Assembly, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botwey, said that the event would help participants analyze and improve various methods to peacekeeping operations.
Protecting civilians, strategic communication, safety and security, the mental health of peacekeepers, and the role of women in peacekeeping, she said, would be the five primary subjects that will be discussed.
During UN Peacekeeping Ministerial meetings, Member States are urged to make explicit commitments to close crucial gaps, utilize cutting-edge technologies, and address urgent challenges in order to improve the operational effectiveness of peacekeeping deployments.
To ensure the meeting’s success, the Minister urged all Member States to fulfill their pledges.
As missions navigate unprecedented challenges and threats, the Minister stated that this year’s event would focus on significant issues like the protection of civilians, strategic communications and addressing misinformation and disinformation, safety and security, the mental health of uniformed peacekeepers, and the crucial role of women in peacekeeping.
“As a long-standing troop and police contributor to UN Peacekeeping since the 1960s, Ghana acknowledges the long and positive track record of peacekeeping in Africa and believes that UN Peacekeeping has a future and remains indispensable and invaluable in promoting peace in conflict settings worldwide,” she said. It is important that the world maintain its resolve to protect this multilateral instrument and fully back the Secretary-General’s initiatives like the Action for Peacekeeping and A4P+, which are crucial to enhancing the efficiency of contemporary peacekeeping and addressing the security challenges of our time.
According to her, “a number of milestones have been reached” and “preparations are far advanced for the event in Accra.” She said that member States could register and get details about the meeting by visiting www.accra2023pkm.mfa.gov.gh.
