The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association ( GRNMA ), plans to initiate a series of demonstrations in response to the increased fees for license verification, which were raised from GHC$550 to GHC $3,000.
The GRNMA, led by President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, claims that the fee hike, which comes to an astounding 445.5%, is unfair and onerous for its members.
Beginning on March 22, 2024, and lasting until April 3, 2024, the planned demonstrations will begin with the symbolic act of wearing red bands at all healthcare facilities and workplaces where nurses and midwives work.
On March 27, there will be a crucial press conference to further air their complaints.
GRNMA then intends to intensify its protest by ceasing to provide services in the outpatient department from March 28 to April 2. This will culminate in the removal of all inpatient care as well as other necessary services on April 3.
GRNMA expresses discontent with key institutions, including the Ministry of Health, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and the Ghanaian Parliament, for not responding to their request for a review of the GH¢3,000.00 cost. They underline the urgent need for recognition and action on this demand.
In a statement, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo emphasized how important these steps are, considering the financial difficulties Ghanaian nurses and midwives confront in addition to their unsustainable pay scales.
All grades of nurses and midwives agree that a maximum 25% increase is manageable, according to the association’s proposal.
The GRNMA affirms that all nurses and midwives have the right to participate freely in the planned protests without fear of retaliation or pressure.
“It is the right of all nurses and midwives to fully participate in the aforementioned actions; therefore, they should not be threatened or coerced in any way.”
The GRNMA leadership, which consists of Mr Moses Robertson Anyigba, National Treasurer, Dr David Tenkorang-Twum, First Vice President Mr Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, and President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, is unified in their quest of treating their members fairly and equally.
