President Akufo-Addo has ordered the Volta River Authority to decrease the sale of electricity to neighboring countries in response to the ongoing intermittent power outages, or “dumsor,” according to Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the Parliamentary Energy Committee.
“The President is keeping a close eye on things, and I’ve even learned that there’s a directive to reduce the amount of electricity we export to other nations. In an interview with Joy News, the President stated, “It is a factor that would come and help. I think there is a greater need in the country than making profits abroad.”
Recently, Ghanaians have been dealing with inconsistent energy supply, which has disrupted numerous industries and caused annoyances for consumers.
In light of the ongoing power crisis, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, the CEO of the Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG), has called on the Volta River Authority (VRA) to stop exporting electricity and concentrate on supplying domestic demand. The President has issued this direction.
According to IPGG, Ghana is now experiencing a power outage, which makes it necessary for VRA to restrict the export of hydroelectric power to nearby nations where customers can purchase power at much cheaper rates.
Mr. Apetorgbor stressed the importance of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority refraining from imposing high electricity tariffs on Ghanaians, especially during periods of unstable power supply.
