Chidimma Adetshina has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria after a contentious attempt to compete in Miss South Africa last month. Adetshina, 23, was born to a Nigerian father and South African mother in South Africa and holds South African citizenship.
She found herself at the center of a national controversy after some South Africans, including a government minister, opposed her participation in the pageant because of her Nigerian roots.
In the wake of the controversy, she withdrew from the competition.
