In the North Dawhenya Electoral Area of the Greater Accra Region, some insects that are suspected to be black flies have invaded various communities.
Residents are worried because the flies have been leaving blood stains at the places where they have bitten people.
Some of the affected residents claim that they have been causing swelling on their bodies by repeatedly scratching their skin.
The impacted areas include, among others, Abbeykope, Miotso, Eagle Nest Estates, and Mackweon Estates.
Moses Nii-P Kutor, the assemblyman for North Dawhenya Electoral Area, Faculty news on Monday morning [July 24, 2023] that he has asked the District Health Directorate and the Environmental Health Office to assist those living there.
He stated, “We are told that the stings of the insects are deadly and cause ulcers and other skin problems in their victims.
In order for the residents to resume their regular routines, he demanded that the problem be given prompt attention.
“The situation is getting worse by the day, and my concern is for the kids,” he added. “My concern is for the kids in school, especially those who keep complaining about the invasion and the painful bites.”
In the meantime, a source at the Ningo Prampram District’s District Health Directorate acknowledged the insects’ existence in the neighborhood and said that investigations into the problems were ongoing.
According to the source, they were developing a plan with the Environmental Health Office in the District that included fumigating the affected communities.
