Ampem Darkoa Ladies, champions of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, struck it lucky again by securing a spot to represent Ghana at the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League.
In the championship match of the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifications, The Nana Mma battled valiantly to defeat Nigeria’s Delta Queens 1-0.
Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah scored the game’s lone goal in the match, which was held in Benin City, Nigeria, to give the Techiman-based team the victory.
Amponsah headed into the net from a rebound in the 42nd minute of the game to register her second goal of the tournament having also scored in the semifinal.
Delta Queens had the majority of the ball at the break and often threatened, but Ampem Darkoa’s defense was tough and they maintained their calm.
The Ghanaian team held on and won despite the late attempts to ensure their place in the main round.
After losing to Bayelsa Queens in the championship game the previous year and failing to qualify, Ampem Darkoa is hoping for better luck this time around.
At the end of the game, Ampem Darkoa’s Nancy Amoh was adjudged the Woman of the Match while Mary Amponsah was named the top scorer of the competition after scoring 8 goals in 4 matches.
They will become the second Ghanaian team to play at the CAF Women’s Champions League following the participation of Hasaacas Ladies in the maiden edition in 2021.
Hasmal Ladies however suffered heartbreak in the final losing to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
