On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Ghana for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will attend the 15th BRICS Summit at the request of His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa.
Brazil, India, China, and South Africa’s presidents will all be present at the summit. Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of the Russian Federation, will represent the country in place of President Vladimir Putin, who will not be attending the summit.
The international economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa collectively make up the BRICS, which was created in 2010 after South Africa joined the BRIC group. Although while the BRICS Summit is a gathering of heads of state and government, it is also accompanied by a robust economic program that ends with the BRICS Business Forum.
At the Summit, President Akufo-Addo is anticipated to make a statement. He was accompanied by the Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, as well as representatives from the Flagstaff House and the Foreign Ministry.
The Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, shall operate in the President’s absence in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution until the President’s return to Ghana on Friday, August 25, 2023.
