Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, a former Black Stars midfielder, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other officials to critically examine the country’s current football landscape.
The ex-Udinese player was discussing the recent elimination of Ghana’s U-23 team from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco when he spoke.
Different Ghanaian national teams have had numerous defeats in competitions in less than two years, with some even failing in the qualifying rounds.
The Black Stars were unable to make it past the Group stage of both the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2022 World Cup while the Black Starlets and Satellites have failed to qualify for the African Youth Champions.
Meanwhile, women’s football have also been unimpressive with the Black Queens missing out on the last AWCON while the Black Maidens suffered a ban due to age cheating.
Agyemang Badu who has enjoyed significant feats with both the senior national team and the Black Satellites where he won the U-20 World Cup in 2009 by scoring the final penalty kick is worried about the rapid decline.
“When I talk, I don’t get anything from it, but I’m talking because the sport that gave me something, is about to die and I can’t just look on,” he told Joy FM.
“The GFA needs to organize an emergency meeting tomorrow and take stock of what’s happening. Where our football is heading is dangerous.“Ghana football is in dangerous times. If care isn’t taken, in a couple of years, qualification to major competitions may become problematic,” he added.
