In 2021, two Rastafarian boys, Tyrone Iras Marhguy and Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, were denied admission to Achimota School in Ghana because of their dreadlocks which violated the school’s code of conduct.
The students took legal action against the school board, the Minister of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Attorney General to challenge their exclusion.
In May 2021, the High Court ordered the school to admit the students.
Tyrone Marhguy, one of the students, has now excelled in the 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), scoring 8 As in the science stream.
A video shared on social media showed the student, along with others, checking his results on a computer and celebrating his excellent score.
Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, on the other hand, enrolled at Ghana International School on a scholarship.
Following the court ruling, Tyrone Marhguy enrolled at Achimota School and sat for his end-of-term examination within hours of his enrolment.
