The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the need for the Akufo-Addo administration to openly acknowledge the challenges confronting the country.
During a public lecture organized by the Christian Service University in Kumasi, themed “Sustainability of Democracy in Africa: The Ghanaian Experience,” Mahama addressed the ongoing debate regarding the relative value of obtaining a Dutch passport versus pursuing a PhD in Ghana.
He expressed that this debate signifies a prevailing sense of despondency and lack of confidence in Ghana’s future due to ongoing economic adversities. Mahama highlighted the widespread disillusionment and distress within the populace, which has given rise to a spirited discussion on social media concerning the perceived advantages of securing a foreign passport for menial employment in Europe compared to attaining a PhD in Ghana.
He attributed this debate to the adversities confronting the nation.
Furthermore, Mahama urged Ghanaians to abstain from endorsing leaders who have been instrumental in the prevailing economic hardships during the imminent elections.
He remarked, “Those who have demonstrated evident shortcomings in economic stewardship, leading the nation into despair despite their assurances while in opposition and who now attempt to abscond from accountability, should not be entrusted with the presidency during this profound crisis.”
Mahama underscored the necessity for forthright leadership that is willing to take responsibility for challenges rather than engaging in passing blame, asserting that such leadership is indispensable for the preservation of democracy.
