After months of skyrocketing tomato prices, a surprising turn of events has brought welcome relief to both retailers and consumers. Prices have fallen significantly due to seasonal factors. However, some retailers are struggling to attract buyers who are seeking even lower prices.
“A box of tomatoes that was previously sold at GH₵7,000 is now being sold to us between GH₵1,500-2,000. The smaller boxes, which were previously sold between GH₵3,500-4,000, are now selling between GH₵700-800.
The wholesalers have reduced prices, but we are now having challenges finding buyers,” Dede Bibioo, a tomatoes retailer told Citi Business News.
The recent reduction in tomato prices is a welcome relief for customers who are struggling with food costs. They anticipate that prices will come down further in the coming months.
Some retailers are asking the government to invest in factories to process raw tomatoes and to provide land for year-round tomato farming. In the meantime, retailers are looking for ways to pass the savings on to their customers.
Some retailers are advertising lower prices on tomatoes and tomato-based products, and are offering rebates to customers who buy in bulk. Others are offering coupons and discounts on tomatoes and tomato-based products.
