The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, issued a directive for the Marshal to escort Dr Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, out of the house following a comment that was deemed disrespectful.
The incident took place after President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court, during which Bagbin urged the house to consider the matter of the full complement of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report on the nominees to the plenary for consideration.
In response, Dr Kwaku Afriyie expressed that it was not within the Speaker’s purview to make prejudicial comments, stating,
“I believe that as a representative of the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it does not lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you said.”
Consequently, the Speaker instructed the Marshal to remove the MP from the house, citing the remark as impolite and disrespectful, and asserting his authority to do so.
Subsequently, the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, conveyed an apology to the Speaker on behalf of the caucus, acknowledging the Speaker’s leadership and expressing regret for the regrettable incident.
He extended apologies to the entire caucus and expressed hopes for the resolution of the matter.
