The Volta River Authority (VRA) has told more than 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and local assemblies near the Akosombo Dam, about the chance of too much water spilling over. Ing. Ken Arthur, Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services at the VRA, signed the announcement, suggesting a meeting with stakeholders as a precaution.
The message stresses the need to involve everyone early to make sure the Akosombo Dam stays strong and the nearby communities stay safe. The VRA emphasized the importance of preparing and involving stakeholders quickly, even though the water spilling over hasn’t been confirmed yet.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) plans to discuss the potential controlled water spillage from the Akosombo Dam to maintain its structural integrity and ensure community safety. In October 2023, a controlled spillage of the dam was conducted to prevent overflow which led to the displacement of residents in low-lying areas.
The most affected communities were in the North and Central Tongu districts, with estimates indicating that over 35,857 people were displaced, and numerous homes and farmlands were destroyed as a result.
The floods had a significant impact on more than 30,000 individuals in the North Tongu district, leaving them in desperate need of assistance from both government agencies and charitable organisations.
