The Methodist Church of Ghana has responded forcefully to President Akufo-Addo’s alleged hold-up in enacting the Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021.
The church announced intentions to meet with President Akufo-Addo to personally address the issue, with the Presiding Bishop, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, leading the delegation.
Even after parliament passed the law that was supported by a private member’s resolution, the standoff between the President and the Speaker of Parliament still hangs over the legislative process.
President, Akufo-Addo, has refused to accept the bill’s transmission and gives his approval because of an ongoing legal dispute.
However, the Speaker of Parliament has criticized this position, saying that it weakens the legislative branch’s power.
The Most Rev. Dr. Boafo expressed optimism about the result of their planned meeting with the President given these developments.
“It is widely acknowledged that Ghanaians do not endorse the actions of the LGBTQI+ community,” he said. We want to talk about the best course of action when we meet with the President at the Jubilee House.
At a time when the country is struggling to reconcile legal frameworks, human rights, and religious views, this suggested gathering is timely.
The Methodist Church of Ghana is a significant stakeholder in determining national policies and priorities, as seen by its proactive stance.
Stakeholders from a range of industries are waiting to see how this controversial topic is resolved as they get more excited about the meeting’s outcome.
