A nationwide strike by three teacher unions is set to begin on Wednesday, March 20. The Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
The unions announced their intention to begin industrial action on Wednesday, March 20, in a news release. They attributed this to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education’s tardiness in addressing their terms of service.
While the talks for a new collective bargaining agreement were still in progress, they stated that they should be finished by February 29, 2024, at the latest.
As a result, the new Collective Agreement is still unnegotiated. We brought up this issue in a letter dated February 29, 2024, addressed to the Director General of GES, as well as to the National Labor Commission. The matter is still unresolved as we assemble here today,” the statement stated in part.
The unions added that they had brought the lack of a functioning teacher service plan by the Ghana Education Service to the attention of the Director General of GES.
The unions argued that a “cogent and appropriate” scheme will take care of all the requirements in the teaching profession.
The unions also emphasised the government and the GES’s inability to complete the distribution of laptops to all teachers.
