In the Efutu Municipality, the National Democratic Congress stormed Winneba, the main street, as a demonstration of support for its flagbearer John Mahama’s 24-hour economic agenda.
The country is in discussion about the 24-hour economic agenda that the NDC presidential candidate stated months ago. Critics of the policy believe it is the best course of action for Ghana’s failing economy, while detractors believe it is a waste of time.
The NDC believes it has to do more groundwork in the constituencies to drive home the details about the 24-hour economy proposition. It is by this understanding that the Efutu constituency solidarity walk was organised.
James Kofi Annan, the constituency’s parliamentary candidate, claims that the current government’s major initiatives to combat the rising rates of unemployment, particularly among young people, have failed, which is why it is necessary to embrace the concept of a 24-hour economy.
“We have 1.3 million youth out of this total,” he stated.
Mr Annan blamed the high unemployment rate on the long-term failure of government flagship programs.
“Even though there have been numerous youth employment initiatives, such as GYEDA, NYEA, NABCO, National Service, and many more, the unemployment rate is still very high. It implies that every framework of policy this government has adopted has failed.
According to Mr. Annan, Winneba has a seasonal economy where a large number of people work based on what is available during a specific period.
“The situation he added needs an alternative, which is why the 24hr economy is relevant.”
He said that market expansion would need to take precedence when Winneba’s economy opened up.
“He emphasized that the situation calls for an alternative, which is why the 24-hour economy matters. He said that market expansion would need to take precedence when Winneba’s economy opened up.
“If elected to office, I will build Winneba Central Market,” he continued. Mr Annan stated that he is the biggest employer in the Efutu constituency as a way to show his desire to give jobs to the young people who are joining the team. “I pay 300 individuals on my payroll each month as of right now. Although I’ve done my part, the unemployment rate is still higher. Because of this, we require something revolutionary, which is why the 24-hour economy is necessary. He stated.
According to Mr Annan, the NPP has always relied on the support of voters who do not live in or originate from the constituency. He emphasized that the NDC will not overlook the situation.
“I am the NDC’s winner for the Efutu seat. As everyone knows, persons invading our constituency to cast NPP ballots are not Efutu locals. They come from abroad. The NPP has identified and enlisted 200 capable individuals, giving them each the assignment of bringing 100 voters from beyond this constituency. That in and of itself generates 20,000 voters in this constituency. Therefore, the NPP cannot tolerate the NDC boot for boot if voters in the constituency are permitted to cast ballots.
Professor Richard Kofi Asiedu, the party’s Central Regional Chairman, claims that the 24-hour economy is the solution to the unemployment that the NPP government’s free SHS policy is causing. According to Akufo-Ado, he brought Free SHS.
“JM claims he is going to give jobs to individuals who have completed their university education because there are a lot of people who have graduated but do not have jobs. Thus, factories will function on a shift basis where jobless people can find employment,” he said.
