Freddie Blay, the board chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has made it clear that the company approved and acceptable allowance increases for GNPC executives were made.
Rejecting the idea that the increases were outrageous, the former National Chairman of the NPP pointed out that they were put into effect two years prior, not in 2024 as indicated by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Ablakwa claimed on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, that GNPC management had increased their allowances by as much as 150%. He cited intercepted letters that showed daily lodging prices had increased from $400 to $1000, depending on the location.
Mr Blay, however, has refuted these claims, asserting that any allowance adjustments were fair and had been decided upon by GNPC as a whole.
He emphasized that the hikes were reasonable and taken into account the current situation.
“GNPC unanimously decided to raise allowances, but the agreement wasn’t great. It wasn’t overly dramatic. It was 2022, and it made sense. Therefore, if someone was complaining about it and making it appear as though it was 2024, he was merely profiting off such fair rises.
Amidst the public’s scrutiny of the adjustments—especially in light of Ghana’s current economic challenges—Mr. Blay has responded.
