Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital admits 1000+ stroke patients yearly (200 cases 40 years ago). Minimally invasive treatment launched to improve stroke care. Decreased blood flow stroke caused by blood clot blocking/reducing brain blood supply.
Stroke is a common medical condition at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The previous drugs and medication did not dissolve blood clots, resulting in permanent disability for patients.
To resolve this issue, active stroke thrombolysis has been introduced, which administers clot-busting medication to dissolve blood clots in the brain during an acute ischemic stroke.
During the launch of thrombolysis services, Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo, a Consultant Neurologist at KATH, stated that this new method is revolutionary.
“Active Stroke thrombolysis dissolves the clot to restore blood flow to the brain and cure stroke. The treatment is revolutionary and almost curative, avoiding paralysis and disability.
The cost is about 15 thousand cedis, highly standardized and subsidized at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The hospital’s new strategy is to optimize tertiary healthcare delivery”.
“KATH hospital now offers a special service to save stroke patients from suffering the worst possible impact of the disease. The hospital management requests all stakeholders to admit stroke patients to KATH for the service.
The Deputy Regional Director of Clinic Care at Ghana Health Service is urging stakeholders to increase public awareness about stroke”.
“Awareness can be championed by stakeholders. Ghana’s health service is ready to take up the challenge and support the new step of KATH. For the immediate terms, awareness and public education is what we can capitalize on,” she said.
