Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, an independent presidential candidate, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the current economic crisis in the country.
Kyerematen believes that the Vice President, who is seeking to become the President, is an integral part of the cabinet’s decisions and cannot disassociate himself from the country’s struggles.
He dismissed claims that vice presidents lack the leverage to impact the country positively and drew a parallel between the late former President J.E. Atta-Mills and President Akufo-Addo, who both allowed their respective vice presidents to lead processes.
Kyerematen admitted to being part of the mismanagement of the economy during his tenure as a Trade Minister until his resignation in September 2023, when he parted ways with the New Patriotic Party.
Despite his involvement in the economic mess, he underscored the importance of his capabilities as a change agent.
As the founder and leader of the Movement for Change, Kyerematen explained that governments are not solely run by ministers but by an executive authority at the highest level, making it difficult for Bawumia to absolve himself of complete blame.
In an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi TV, Kyerematen pointed out that being a minister doesn’t mean you’re solely responsible for the government’s decisions.
He also refuted the theory that vice presidents lack the leverage to do anything, citing the cases of former President J.E Mills and President Akufo-Addo.
Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, called on Ghanaians to give Dr Bawumia a fair hearing before his national address, arguing that he has only served as a Vice President, and should be given a chance.
